Most of us have heard of the New Jersey Devils hockey team. How many of us have listened to the monster called the Jersey Devil? Also known as the Leed Devil or Devil Leed, the New Jersey Devil has been causing havoc in Southern Jersey for centuries.
The creature has an unusual beginning; The Leed Devil is the result of its mother. You heard me, it’s mother. The monster is the thirteenth child born into the Lead family. Before the child was born, its mother cursed the baby. The mother cursed the child is up for speculation, but the fact is she cursed the baby. The baby was born normal.
Soon the baby grew horns, wings and started to look like a miniature horse. The baby transformed into this hideous creature and seemed to understand what it was as she shrieked, flapped her wings, and flew towards the Pinelands forest.
The Leed Devil is still seen today in the Pinelands. At the time, the Leed family owned the Pinelands, now part of Southern New Jersey.
For centuries, there have been sightings of the devil, and if you do not see it, the creature’s scream is more terrifying than its looks. Next time you are in the Pineland Jersey area, look and listen for the Jersey Devil.
