A Storm Is Brewing (a poem)

A storm is brewing is poem about the turbulent thoughts that goes through a person’s head who have bipolar disorder.  I will use Norse Gods as imagery for these thoughts and behaviors.

I’m jolted out of bed

I hear the winds swirling

The rain pounding

A storm is brewing.

Aegier is restless

Excitement spreads

Through my veins

Great things are going to happen.

I run naked into the rain

Dancing, twirling, embracing

The warmth of the storm

Time for work.

I dress quickly

Run to the beach

Feeling the sand

Enter my pores.

I stare at the sea

Waves are turbulent

I smile at the approaching storm

Lightning spreads across the sky.

Build this

Write this

Lost in the juices

Of a story.

The storm is upon me

My body is exhausted

Strong gale blows

Shutters banging.

Like my cat, Jezebel

I find a corner

Waiting to die

Loki is looking for me.

Too many thoughts

As the storm consumes me

I scream for mercy

I pass into another realm.

Sunshine is scorching my face

What’s the point?

My mind gives up

The body agrees.

Movement is a struggle

Hours have passed

Hel, the daughter of Loki

Taunts me.

Your life is over

Hel says in a

Intoxicating voice

Time to go with me.

Anger builds within me

Too many thoughts

Too many emotions

Why am I here?

Tossing and turning

I try to sleep

Hel taunts me

To join her.

Sorrow takes over

Freya appears

Get up!

You must fight!

The war isn’t over

I will guide you

Through the storm

That haunts you.

I am love and war,

Says Freya

 She crouched before me

Take my hand.

The winds begin to blow

Howling in my head

The storm is quickly

Approaching.

I run outside to

Dance in the rain

A monster slams

my reality.

Not a monster

A cyclone

Twirling in my head

Torn between life and death.

You are loved

Freya bellows

Let the elementals

Work with you.

Air from the East

Fire from the South

Water from the West

Earth from the North

Converge on my spirit

Thank you, Divine

For making me whole

Part of the world.

With the Divine’s love

I fight the storm

Battle Hel

Rise again.
